by Fred Hendricks and Cindy Ladage | Kelly Mutschler Receives Top Award in Large Scale DivisionIn the highly competitive Large Scale Division of the diorama contest, Kelly Mutschler of Alexandria, Va., took first place at the 2015 National Farm Toy Show. Kelly described his entry as a typical Midwest farm during fall harvest in the late 1990s. Kelly grew up on a farm in Franklin County, Iowa. And while he is employed as a federal marshall assigned to dignitary protection in Washington, D.C., Kelly returns home to help his family with the fall harvest. "I have many fond memories from the years when I was still home on the farm. Those cherished thoughts return each fall when I return home to help my parents with the harvest. Building the diorama was quite natural. I utilized models of the equipment that I grew up with rather than today's machinery," he described. "I worked from old family pictures and memory. In addition, much of the equipment from those past years is still being used on the home farm. I made pictures of them as a guide to build components of the diorama," Kelly commented. Kelly was fortunate in having some basic woodworking instruction while in high school. He gained experience in building things while still on the farm. And Kelly refined his craft through scratch-building equipment and working on the diorama.
