by Bob Steinbrunn and Luann Dart
With his interest in the John Deere tractor, history and modeling, Bob Steinbrunn was unable to resist acquiring a set of the rare 1/16 scale Frank Hansen castings of the John Deere (Dain) all-wheel-drive tractor of 1918 when he found them on eBay. Although the zinc castings were incomplete, he spent 735 hours over the next 19 months assembling 2,693 pieces into a museum-quality model. "Once finished, I put the model on my postal scale and found it weighed 2 pounds 4.1 ounces. This turned out to be no lightweight in any sense of the word," he says. Bob's fascination with model building began at a young age, coinciding with a love of flight. "Ever since I was 6 years old, I knew clearly that I would grow up to be a pilot and part of that was building model airplanes my whole life," he says. His childhood dreams came true, as he served as a pilot in the U.S. Army, including a one-year stint as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam.
