 Click to view electronic issue. | Creating a farm layout in 1/64 scale can be a challenging and rewarding project. Farm toy enthusiasts build displays for a number of reasons, including displaying their toys and capturing a moment in time of their favorite farmstead or scene. To successfully create a display, builders will need to have some basic how-to knowledge and a willingness to try new things during the building process. We'll discuss some basic display elements, how to create them and where to find supplies. Before starting the new layout, take some time to begin with the end in mind. What topography, scenery, buildings and equipment will be included? Also, set a budget for yourself as you build. It can be surprising how quickly the expenses add up, especially when higher-quality scenery elements are included. We once spoke to a display builder who spent more than $100 just on the 1:64 scale garden behind a farmhouse. Many display builders have included a farm field as part of their display. Depending on the type of crop being highlighted, the builder could have his or her work cut out. On our display, we've used pink foam insulation board as a base to work off of. The beauty of using this material is that it is easy to shape and is fairly sturdy. Once you've outline the field and have created some interesting topography, you are ready to cover the base. There are two good ways that we've found to cover the foam board. One is to paint it a flat brown and the other is to glue a fine layer of sifted, dry soil to the board.
