ABOUT THE TRACTOR John Deere introduced at least 38 new tractors during the 1980s, during a time when at least three other competitors merged, were sold or went out of business altogether. The 8650 was the middle model of John Deere's 50 Series four-wheel drive tractors that were first available in 1982. Efficiency was the advertising focus, with John Deere noting that these tractors could be used throughout the season, not simply for tillage. The 8650 was able to plant and cultivate 30-inch rows, and perform a variety of field operations with its draft-control hitch and full-power PTO. In his book, Ultimate Tractor Power: Articulated Tractors of the World, Peter Simpson describes the 50 Series of the real John Deere tractors: Introduced in 1982, the 50 Series four-wheel-drive articulated tractors offered another first for John Deere. It was the first time the company used a V-8 engine in one of its articulated tractors.
